- Emily Ballock named Scholar Athlete of the Year

- Nine months ago, the 6Sports department started a search for the 2007-2008 Scholar Athlete of the Year. Tonight - of the nine athletes that were honored this season for their accomplishments in athletics and academics - only one stands above the rest. So get your popcorn ready, it's time to honor Eudora High's Emily Ballock - Scholar Athlete of the Year.

- In terms of what they did and how it was perceived, Dorian Green and Mallory West could not have been more opposite. Green, a junior standout for the Lawrence High basketball and baseball teams, carried the weight of the world on his shoulders as a point guard and starting pitcher. West, a 2008 LHS graduate, competed only with — and often against — herself.
- Board beefs up LHS drainage project as part of athletic facilities overhaul

- Amid neighborhood concerns, Lawrence school district leaders have decided to bump up a drainage project at Lawrence High School, 1901 La. Now included in a plan to overhaul athletic facilities on the campus is an estimated $9,000 project to improve drainage on the western side of the LHS property.

- Former Free State High star running back Brian Murphy, who redshirted at Kansas University last season with twin brother Ryan, said Wednesday he is transferring to Emporia State.

- The parents of more than 100 Lawrence 3rd-8th graders are enjoying their mornings this week. That's because those mom's and dad's are dropping the kids off at Dirk Wedd and Bob Lisher's 12th Annual Youth Football camp at Free State High. And as Kevin Romary found out - those two head coaches are taking things very seriously in West Lawrence this week…

- On a day Seabury Academy’s tennis team played Lawrence High’s junior varsity, the Seahawks had a few junior high girls in the lineup as well. Seventh-grader Padget Sutherland received an opportunity to compete against high schoolers Friday at Lawrence Tennis Center, taking over for senior Gabrielle Dillon, who was out because of an arm injury. The seventh-grader teamed up with older sister Brooke Sutherland, a senior at Seabury, to compete in the No. 1 doubles match.

- There are certain things parents can tell their up-and-coming athlete without the message fully sinking in. Such messages perhaps carry a bit more weight when delivered by a national champion such as Kansas University guard Sherron Collins, who helped the Jayhawks defeat Memphis in overtime, 75-68, on April 7 in the NCAA finals.
