Amid neighborhood concerns, Lawrence school district leaders have decided to bump up a drainage project at Lawrence High School, 1901 La. Now included in a plan to overhaul athletic facilities on the campus is an estimated $9,000 project to improve drainage on the western side of the LHS property.

Blake Phillips’ favorite book is “Ricky Ricotta’s Giant Robot.” That might be a fitting favorite, considering Blake’s reading abilities border on the superhuman. Blake, who will be a second-grader this fall at Tonganoxie Elementary School, read a whopping 700 books during first grade.

It appears things won’t change much next year for the school resource officers and crossing guards the city provides. “The city is committed to having those school resource officers there. I think it’s an incredibly good program,” City Commissioner Rob Chestnut said.

An Oskaloosa man got a makeover — on his tractor-trailer. Dave Tenpenny, an automotive teacher at Oskaloosa High School, was chosen to be on “Trick My Truck,” a show on Country Music Television that specializes in accessorizing semitrailers. But he had nothing to do with getting on the show.

Then, Lyndon Rabe, of Shawnee, did the unthinkable — he leaned forward and put his hands on the table in front of him. “You know what you just did?” Sgt. Steve McCorkill chided the sixth-grader. “You left evidence. What if that was the only place the killer touched?” This was why police officers had a rule about keeping their hands in their pockets at a crime scene, McCorkill explained.

More than 70 percent of increased spending by school districts in recent years went toward student instruction, a new audit says. The audit was done at the request of lawmakers who asked how school districts spent funding increases that were approved by the Legislature after 2005, when the Kansas Supreme Court ordered more dollars for schools.

When Patty Kennedy heard the news that David Booth, a 1964 Lawrence High graduate, had cut a check for $100,000 to the Lawrence Lions Alumni Association, she was shocked. “You could have picked me up off the floor,” said Kennedy, the alumni association’s president.

For Shane Merrifield, high school was a time to chase girls and party. Studying was secondary, so the 32-year-old Topeka native dropped out during his sophomore year. That was 1992. But today, when he and 84 of his classmates, ages 16 to 50, receive their General Educational Development diplomas from the Adult Learning Center, Merrifield can move forward, past the demons that kept him, as he said, “living idly.”
