June 28, 2008
On a warm summer Friday night, nine Lawrence youths performed Shakespeare in South Park. If the group hadn’t spent the last few weeks practicing “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and being engaged by volunteers who created the Lawrence Youth Ensemble, a new free theater camp for youth, many of them said they were likely to instead be walking downtown, sleeping or on Facebook, a social networking Web site.

As Chautauqua gets into full swing, organizers were happy to note that the event has turned Lawrence into a tourist destination. It’s helping the Lawrence Convention and Visitors Bureau attract people from out of town, while educating people of all ages about the hard times of the 1930s.
Getting Kinky: Songwriter, novelist and political candidate Friedman not one to blow smoke
June 20, 2008
Kinky Friedman is probably more comfortable holding a cigar in his hand than he is a guitar or microphone. “I smoke eight to 10 a day, and I hope to live forever,” Friedman says. Even so, the iconic Texan can’t quite recall the first time he ever puffed on a cigar. “I forgot the first half of my life,” he admits. “But I would bet it was a King Edward or a rum Crooks in high school.”
Chautauqua: History under the tent
June 19, 2008
In 1928, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to travel solo across the Atlantic Ocean and on Wednesday, exactly 80 years later, she told her story to children in Lawrence. Well, someone who plays her did. A group of children participating in the Youth Chautauqua Camp saw firsthand how the art of playing a historical figure is accomplished, and they heard about the 1930s from people who lived through the decade in Lawrence.

Chautauqua re-enactors find similarities between ’30s hardships, current events
June 15, 2008
Frankly, it’s hard to tell when Doug Watson is Doug Watson, and when he is Will Rogers. Watson’s authentic Oklahoma accent, his head topped with Rogers’ trademark brimmed hat, makes a dead ringer for the famous Sooner humorist and social commentator. It’s been that way for more than 15 years. But this isn’t just theater. Watson is a history professor at Oklahoma Baptist University, and he knows Rogers’ life and quotes inside and out.

If you want to have a pleasant evening, go see the Lawrence Community Theatre’s fine production of “Annie Get Your Gun,” Irving Berlin’s immortal musical. Theater program sets stage for new experience
May 26, 2008
Rachael Perry knows there are plenty of children interested in Lawrence theater. She’s worked on stage and behind the scenes with them. But she believes some children, especially at-risk youths, are missing opportunities to get involved. She’s hoping to bridge the gap by providing a new theater program this summer.
Review: ‘Movin’ Out’ combines brilliance, confusion
May 3, 2008
Billy Joel is one of the all-time great storytellers in American music, so it’s only natural his work would provide the backdrop for a dance extravaganza that took Broadway by storm in 2002. Twyla Tharp’s interpretation of more than 25 of Joel’s songs, “Movin’ Out,” won a Tony Award in 2003, and a tour of it hit the Lied Center Thursday night.

If martyrdom, love and violence are hallmarks of opera, then a new production opening this weekend in Kansas City will go over well — even if it's set in Kansas.
Review: Acting matches memorable script in ‘Shape of Things’
April 28, 2008
“What is art?” is one of those questions that’s difficult to answer. Each person answers it a little differently, but is something art solely because the artist says it is?
