- Fiesta begins today with food, fun, music

- The 27th annual St. John’s Mexican Fiesta will kick off Friday night complete with Mexican food, live music, dancing and family fun. One of the key features of the fiesta is traditional Latin dancing performed every year by Fiesta Folklorica, a group of about 35 people from ages 7 to 18. “I’m looking forward to the kids having a good time,” said LaShane Starr, director of the Lawrence dance group.

Madison Epp, a seventh-grader at Clark Middle School, is playing the part of Clara in the Kansas City Ballet’s production of Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker.”

She consults her notes, stops the dancers and turns off the Tin Hat Trio tune that’s been accompanying their movements. “Here’s something I’d like to try,” Rieger says, reworking a detail. She asks the dancers to repeat the sequence.
