City praise
July 3, 2008
To the editor: Hey, the city is on a roll. We need a couple of “atta-boys” for Sue and the boys downtown at City Hall. They finally got it, something a lot of us knew five years ago. Combine the two bus systems! It only makes “cents.” Also, look how far a dollar can go. You can buy a whole train depot. Looking like Trump.
Missing ‘Hawks
July 2, 2008
To the editor: I’m writing to you in hopes this will be printed and it will appeal to the compassionate side of the person or persons who did this.
Wishful advice
July 2, 2008
To the editor: The NBA draft last week was very disappointing to our national champion Kansas University basketball team players and fans. We had all assumed that those professional teams would see the great value of our heroes and quickly snap them up.
Park trashed
July 1, 2008
To the editor: As I entered Clinton Park on Sunday morning, one week after the Wakarusa Music Festival, and drove to the familiar picnic area where I would park and walk, I had a nasty shock. I looked in dismay at ruined, rutted fields, huge mounds of rotting garbage piled up almost everywhere.
Eco devo myth
July 1, 2008
To the editor: As night follows day, the American Eagle Myth can be counted on to land in the middle of local reporting on economic development. The angry villagers chasing a frightened, helpless corporation out of town with pitchforks and torches is a useful image in our local politics, I guess. But it didn’t happen.
Hungry children
June 30, 2008
To the editor: I just wanted to comment on the “Operation Breakthrough” to feed the children of Kansas City June 26. I listened to several Kansas City radio stations such as 94.9 KCMO and 101 The Fox that devoted the entire day raising money to feed the hungry children of KC.
Class concern
June 30, 2008
To the editor: We seem to have settled on the alternatives for our next leader. Change is in the air! We are excited! Wait a minute! In this entire milieu, is there anyone who cares about the middle class — the group to which most of us belong?
Replace depot
June 26, 2008
To the editor: I agree with the Lawrence City Commission’s decision to talk to the railroad about acquiring the BNSF depot. Marty Kennedy was correct about visitors to Lawrence having a positive first impression. We should have a usable depot if Lawrence is to continue having increased rail traffic.
Back to brick
June 26, 2008
To the editor: I was very pleased and surprised when the city replaced an asphalt strip on Seventh Street with brick to match the existing street. Perhaps the intersections will get the same treatment eventually?
Energy advisers
June 26, 2008
To the editor: The Lawrence Journal-World has been doing an excellent job of covering energy and policy discussions in Kansas. As research director of the Climate and Energy Project (CEP), a project of the Land Institute in Salina, I have definitely enjoyed following the coverage.
Developers rule
June 25, 2008
To the editor: Here goes old Bud Nation again. I am too old to have it really matter what happens around me. I have fought heart attacks, a stroke, getting a pacemaker and defibrillator and have no further to go except into the ground. That is, if the developers leave any ground for me.
So, sue me
June 25, 2008
To the editor: Has it come to the point Kansas University (darn, I guess it’s $10 a pop to use the official logos, you see) is so important in your lives and businesses that we all stand by while they are so very greedily naughty? If I use a blue magic marker on my red T-shirt and write my support for the athletics department will they come after me?
District’s loss
June 24, 2008
To the editor: This past year, I was invited by my granddaughter to participate in special projects and field trips with her fifth-grade class at Hillcrest School. I met and was able to observe her teacher in a variety of teaching situations. He is an amazingly gifted young man with excellent teaching skills.
Define ‘victory’
June 24, 2008
To the editor: I have just listened to Mr. McCain talking on CNN and he has made the statement that he wants our troops to come home after the victory in Iraq. I have a question. What constitutes “victory” in this elusive, shadowbox “war” started by President Bush to stop Iraq’s production of (what proved to be nonexistent) “weapons of mass-destruction?
Ready to recycle?
June 24, 2008
To the editor: When people throw trash in the street and let their dogs defecate on others’ property without picking it up with a bag, what makes you think this city’s ready for recycling?
