Take a Stand

Liberty: America’s guiding light
May 31, 2008
Our country is sensing a great looming economic, monetary, foreign and social crisis. Republicans and Democrats at all levels of government are promoting a social, welfare and warfare state.
Kaw Valley property is already productive
May 24, 2008
The Airport Industrial Park will soon come before the City Commission for approval and rezoning from agriculture to light industrial. This project would pave over the best farm dirt of Douglas County, perhaps of our region, and will cut the heart out of a 140-year-old successful family farm.
Take a Stand: Minimum wage is too low
April 27, 2008
The April 1 Journal-World carried a column by Kansas University business professor Mark Hirschey called “Inconvenient truth about minimum wage.” Since it was April Fools’ Day and the article gave many anecdotes but few “facts,” we’re not certain it was altogether serious. In case it was, we’re responding with some facts of our own.
China ties place moral obligation on KU
April 17, 2008
Since mid-March, the brutal actions taken by the Chinese government to suppress demonstrations by Tibetans seeking religious freedom, cultural preservation and environmental protection have been in the news.
Take a Stand: Inconvenient truth about minimum wage
April 1, 2008
It’s an election year, and bad economic policy is popular once again. One of the worst ideas bandied about is that raising the minimum wage is good for low-wage workers.
Take a Stand: Board supports curbside recycling
March 31, 2008
The Sustainability Advisory Board (SAB) would like to weigh in on the recycling survey that will soon be sent out by the city. Although the SAB did not originally intend to make any public comments on the survey before it came out, we are concerned that the front page article and the editorial in the Lawrence Journal-World may shed a negative light on curbside recycling.
US may need change of spirit
February 7, 2008
Change is a frivolous word. Presidential candidates all declare themselves for change. Every one is for their own version of change. Even George Bush concedes that if he were running for office again he would advocate change! So, what needs to be changed? There’s a word for what the American public wants to change. That word also sounds a bit frivolous, but let me make a case for that need and the word I have chosen to describe it. The word is spirit!
Economic inequality is key to immigration
January 2, 2008
As a Mexican citizen living legally in Lawrence, I am extremely interested in the debate about illegal immigration (mainly from Mexico). I am a law-abiding citizen both here and in my own country and therefore I cannot but agree that wholesale breaking of American laws is unacceptable and something must be done to solve the problem of illegal migration and border security. (Mexico has a taste of the same problems with Central American immigrants.)
Hotel’s design spurs comment
December 27, 2007
The current Oread Hotel design represents a huge loss of opportunity for the community, the university, the neighborhood and, ultimately, the developer and the architect. It does not measure up to Lawrence’s signature buildings: The Eldridge Hotel, Liberty Hall, Watkins National Bank, the Douglas County Courthouse, or the English Lutheran Church.
LMH leaves gap in mental health services
December 26, 2007
I watch the numerous TV ads extolling the improvements and virtues of Lawrence Memorial Hospital and its claim of serving all of our citizens. Sometimes I get mad, but most of the time I just feel sad, like tears are washing over my very soul. I, too, am a Lawrence citizen. I just happen to be one of those that has no room at the inn because I have a serious and persistent mental illness.
State must assess power options
December 20, 2007
Developing diversity in electric power sources would be a benefit to Kansas consumers if done in an all-around reasonable and sane manner. But pursuing a new pathway can be a costly proposition, and before pursuing changes, a business or a state needs to weigh all potential benefits and risks.
KU values its distinguished profs
December 17, 2007
A recent column in the Lawrence Journal-World questioned what Kansas University does to highlight the accomplishments of its distinguished professors. As a distinguished professor myself, I want to take this opportunity to detail how KU supports its top faculty.
Professor questions judge selection
December 8, 2007
State Rep. Paul Davis, speaking for the Kansas Bar Association, says the current judicial selection process allows the Kansas Supreme Court to maintain its independence from politics (“Judicial selection process criticized,” Journal-World,” Dec. 1).
Surprising season stirs emotion
November 28, 2007
I always cry on Senior Day for the Kansas University football team. It’s the last home game of the season. I know that few of these young men will ever have a day again when thousands of people will cheer them or that the exultation of an event will ever be as great as that day, so as their names are called and they run onto the field, I cry.
Deciphera misconceptions addressed
November 24, 2007
The tax rebate offered to Deciphera Pharmaceuticals in order to keep this important firm in Lawrence was poorly handled leading to an unfortunate and otherwise avoidable controversy. Subsequently a number of individuals have commented in the form of signed letters to this paper and in anonymous e-mail messages as well.
