Simons: Campaign will challenge voters to verify information
June 21, 2008
It appears the 2008 political campaign season is going to be filled with many tough, mean campaign tactics from the presidential race to the many hotly contested U.S. House and Senate seats. Hopefully, the rough stuff will be minimized at the local and state levels, but perhaps that is wishing for too much.
Simons: Kansas should seek role as national leader in energy field
June 14, 2008
There is little question that our nation’s economy currently is Americans’ No. 1 issue or concern. Various polls tied in with the upcoming presidential election show the economy is the top issue, with Iraq, the environment and other matters fading into the background.
Simons: Lack of Strong Hall leadership hampers KU progress
June 7, 2008
A recent news story told of Kansas University School of Business officials ratcheting up efforts to raise $50 million for a new School of Business building. The school failed to match a $10 million challenge grant by the deadline set by a KU alumni donor and, consequently, the money was taken off the table.
Simons: Sebelius balancing current duties, future prospects
May 24, 2008
Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is walking a political tightrope these days trying to pay attention to her duties and responsibilities as Kansas governor and, at the same time, maintain a high, positive profile among the nation’s senior Democratic leaders.
Simons: St. Luke’s efforts to gain competitive edge will continue
May 17, 2008
So far, it’s been a battle of words. How long this will last before it becomes a more bitter, “get-even” type battle is anyone’s guess, but based on the history of the Kansas City hospital wars, St. Luke’s Hospital officials are likely to attempt stronger measures to try to restore, maintain or improve their reputation and competitive position in Kansas City.
Simons: Defining chamber’s mission is first step in CEO search
May 10, 2008
The past few days, a number of Lawrence residents have visited with representatives of a company called Waverly Partners LLC, which has been hired by the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce to provide names of individuals to be considered as the chamber’s new president and CEO.
Simons: One individual with a powerful vision can inspire many
May 3, 2008
What a difference one man can make. In 1967 Takeru Higuchi joined Kansas University as a Regents Professor of Pharmacy and Chemistry and in the 20 short subsequent years before he died, he showed what an individual with vision, high energy, a constant desire to excel and challenge, who possesses great intelligence and superior leadership skills, can achieve.
KU needs to do better job of capitalizing on sports success
April 26, 2008
Adequate financial support for higher education, whether in the form of private monies, state tax support, tuition charges or federal grants, is becoming a greater concern for school administrators, those who govern the schools and friends and alumni of the institutions.
Simons: Bush not the only one responsible for nation’s problems
April 19, 2008
Other than resigning from office and pleading guilty to every charge that has been hurled against him for the past seven years, is there anything George W. Bush could do to please his critics?
Simons: Any KU fine arts restructuring should build on success
April 12, 2008
What’s going to happen to the Kansas University School of Fine Arts? What kind of a school will it be five, 10 or 20 years from today? What skills, talents or experience will a new dean bring to the school?
Simons: KU basketball fans should thank both Self and Williams
April 5, 2008
One of these days — it’s almost useless to try to predict when — but one of these days, the majority of those in Lawrence who have nothing good to say about former Kansas University basketball coach Roy Williams will either have passed on, left Lawrence or realized how silly, small and foolish they have been.
Simons: Negative attitudes, lack of leadership hurt Lawrence
March 29, 2008
The headline said, “City cool to firm’s offer on Farmland.” The big question in Lawrence today is: Is there anything that can be proposed, whether it is a retail development, an industrial facility, highway or street extensions, the location of new and better recreation facilities, zoning and land use for industrial development or any other significant issue in Lawrence that would merit the enthusiastic support of a majority of local residents?
